Status Quo drummer Jeff Rich joined Priory pupils from Years 7 to 11 for a drumming workshop on Monday 18 November.
Since leaving Status Quo after 16 years of playing in the band, Jeff has concentrated on giving students the opportunity to experience the thrill of percussion performance by visiting schools. He worked with 200 Priory students and made the event engaging and fun for pupils and teachers alike.
Splitting the workshop into two parts, Jeff took us first on a journey through the historical development of the drum, allowing students and staff to perform on a variety of different percussion instruments. The second part of the session saw drummers from Priory given a chance to play Jeff’s own kit – the snare drum alone being worth over £10,000! The session ended with a chance for all students to play over 200 pieces of percussion Jeff had brought with him.
Students were inspired and enthused by the rock legend, and one student had even brought part of his own drum kit to be signed.
Mr Young, Director of Performing Arts, summed the event up, paraphrasing the immortal words of Status Quo themselves: ‘I liked it, I liked it, I li….li…liked it….’, a sentiment echoed, I am sure, by each and every student who attended.
