The Year 8 football team progressed through to the next round of the National Cup after a hard fought win against a strong Sholing side. With only one training session together under their belt, the boys were a little rusty and conceded within the first five minutes after a strong break from Sholing.
However, Priory began to press in search of a goal. A few minutes later, Tanatswa Kanjanda beat the defender and picked out Bayley Whitcombe to turn in the equaliser. Priory were now on the up, piling on the pressure, but squandered many chances to take the lead. Priory paid the price as Sholing took the lead for the second time midway through the first half which was slightly against the run of play.
Priory immediately bounced back and scored the equaliser with Nathan Clements hitting a fierce strike into the back of the net from close range. HT Priory 2 – Sholing 2.
Priory reverted to a more familiar 4-4-2 formation for the second half with Harry Frost dropping back to Left midfield who was rewarded with a well taken finish early after the break. Priory’s heads were lifted and a fourth goal was added by Jonas Ayipah with a well placed shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Priory withstood some heavy pressure as Sholing changed to a more attacking formation but held on to record the first victory of the year and book their place in the next round of the cup. Mr Evans and Mr Lamb were impressed in the way that the whole team dug deep to come from behind twice. Well done! FT Priory 4 – Sholing 2′
