Goodbye to our Class of 2012

At a wonderful Leavers’ Assembly today, Priory said a tearful farewell to our Class of 2012. We cherish the five years of your lives you have shared with us and we know you walked away today more independent, inspired, active citizens. You have given so much to Priory through your leadership this year and you leave a large hole in our school. Everyone wishes you all the very best in your exams and we are looking forward to seeing you at the Prom this summer. Work hard and keep in touch. Here’s a picture of our outgoing Senior Pupils. Do share any pictures you took today by emailing priory@priory.portsmouth.sch.uk

Non-Uniform Day Friday 1 June 2012

It has been brought to our attention that the Portsmouth Food Bank is once again running dangerously low on supplies. We are proposing that we once again bring in cans, packets, jars and other non perishable types of food on our final day of this half term, Friday 1 June and permit our pupils to attend in non-school uniform for helping out this worthwhile cause.

Thank you in anticipation of your valued support.

Priory Pupils: Respecting the past and investing in the future

This week Priory pupils in Y10 unveiled three newly restored benches. They have worked hard to return them to their original condition and are rightly proud of the result. The benches are an important part of the school’s memories of two members, one teacher and one pupil, who have died. The fact that today’s generation of teenagers is respectful of our past and keen to invest in our future should be a cause for optimism in the face of many negative stories about teenagers. At Priory we teach and encourage our pupils to be actively engaged in the life of the school and the local community.

Year 9 students become development planners and climate scientists!

Last Friday, a group of Year 9 students and Mr Rogers headed out into Portsmouth to explore sea level rise, thermal expansion of our oceans and lots of other cool stuff.  The day begun by building developments near Milton Marina, points being awarded for any left standing at high tide!  Next, practical experiments were explored during the mini-expedition.  We hope to embed these practical ideas within the curriculum soon!

The day involved creating the Arctic and Antarctic in order to demonstrate the effect of melting ice caps as well as other hands-on experiments.  The day was led by Jamie from Digital Explorer, a genuine polar explorer type person!

Priory Geographers at the forefront of education

Last weekend, two Priory geography teachers headed to Slapton in Devon to work with programmers, developers and hackers in order to design new learning tools.  Mr Rogers and Ms Debens provided input and advice to the coders who created over 9 projects within one weekend.  These included using a 3D printer to process GCSE fieldwork data and an app to visualise controlled assessment data on site.  We hope to be brining these developments to Priory very soon!  Further information, includfing interviews with Mr Rogers and the hackers, can be found here: http://fschackday.wordpress.com/
